JOSAA counselling guide: choice filling, rounds and seat decisions
JOSAA counselling decides which IIT, NIT, IIIT or other participating institute and branch you get, based on your JEE rank and the order of your choices. The list you submit matters as much as your rank. This guide covers how the process works, the decisions that trip students up, and how to approach each round calmly.
Talk it through: Life at IIT and beyondHow JOSAA counselling works
After JEE Advanced results, JOSAA runs a single combined seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other participating government-funded institutes. You register, fill and lock an ordered list of institute and branch choices, and seats are allotted round by round according to your rank, category and that order. Always confirm dates, rules and fees on the official JOSAA website, because they can change every year.
Choice filling: order by what you actually want
The system always gives you the highest choice on your list that your rank allows, so put choices in your true order of preference, not in the order you think you can get. Adding more realistic and safe options lower down never hurts your chances at the top choices. Use the previous years' opening and closing ranks only as a rough guide.
Institute or branch: how to decide
Many students face the choice between a newer branch at an older IIT and a preferred branch at a different institute. Think about what you want to do after graduation, how flexible each institute is about minors and branch changes, and the campus you will live on for four or five years. There is no single right answer, and the decision is worth talking through with someone who has been inside the system.
Freeze, float or slide after each round
When you are allotted a seat you choose to freeze (accept it and leave the process), float (keep the seat but stay eligible for a higher choice at any institute) or slide (keep the seat but stay eligible for a higher branch at the same institute). Pick based on how happy you would be if this seat turned out to be your final one.
Documents, fees and deadlines
Keep your documents ready before the rounds start, including scorecards, category certificates and identity proof, and respond to each round before the deadline. Missing a reporting step can cost you your seat, so check the official schedule after every round.
Frequently asked questions
Does a higher choice on my list reduce my chances at lower ones?
No. You are allotted the highest choice your rank allows, so listing more options in your true order of preference only adds safety.
Can I change my choices after locking them?
Choices can be edited until the choice-filling deadline. After locking and the deadline, the list is final for the allocation rounds, so review it carefully before then.
Should I float or freeze?
Freeze if you would be happy for the current seat to be your final one. Float or slide only if you would genuinely prefer a higher choice and are ready for your seat to change.
Where can I find the official rules and dates?
On the official JOSAA website. Rules, fees and schedules can change every year, so treat it as the final word.
Can I get one-to-one help with my choice list?
Yes. A paid session lets you talk through your rank, options and priorities with an IIT graduate who has been through the process.
IITian Mentor is independent and not affiliated with any IIT, JOSAA or government body. Always confirm rules and dates on official websites.
